“If you can feel that Mother Earth is in you, and you are Mother Earth,
then you are not any longer afraid to die because the earth is not dying.”
--Thich Nhat Hanh
According to our modern scientific perspective, the physical Earth is not living. But as Thich Nhat Hanh says the Earth, our physical Mother, is filled with life force because that life force, known as prana, flows through us and all things—animal, vegetable and mineral. That life force that sustains us is the same life force that sustains the Earth, our physical Mother.
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Buddhist monk who learned from the Buddha. The Buddha was a yogi who learned from the Vedic saints and sages and their Sri Vidya Tradition.
The Sri Vidya Tradition of Yoga says that the Life Force, namely prana, surrounds and penetrates all of the life that we know in the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual world of humans. This Life Force in the scientific world is called energy and like all energy it has different frequencies or vibrations. These vibrations/frequencies are called “shakti” and are considered intelligent life forms that have particular personalities. Therefore, each is given a name and is responded to with respect and love, just like any living being would be responded to respectfully and lovingly.
All of life is sacred in the Sri Vidya Tradition and all is often taken for granted in our science-oriented world. Just like our mind acts against us when we abuse it or criticize it, making it our enemy, so too all the material world, when abused and taken for granted, acts in ways that become very harmful for humans and other animal and vegetable forms.
Sri Vidya says what we do to the Earth and all other life forms will come back to us. “What goes around, comes around” says the colloquial phrase. Or as Yoga says, this is the Law of Karma, the Law of Nature.
Our relationship with our Earthly Mother brings significant peace or significant sadness and anxiety. May we make and find peace with our Earthly Mother, which is one with the Divine Mother.
