Lavandula Angustifolia

Botanical Family: Lamiaceae or Labiatae (mint)

Lavender (the word) comes from the Latin lavare, which means 'to wash'.

The aroma is fresh and floral producing a calming, relaxing and balancing effect.  The oil is steam distilled from the flowering top of the lavender plant.  Lavender is known as “The First Aid Kit in a Bottle”.

University of Miami researchers found that inhalation of lavender oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation.  It also reduced depression and improved cognitive performance (Diego et al., 1998)  (Essential Oils Desk Reference, 4th ED).

Beyond relaxation, Lavender has other reported healing powers…….

According to David Stewart (9 Essential Oils for Every Home), the healing power of lavender was not rediscovered until 1910 when Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, Ph.D., a French perfume chemist, was badly burned in a laboratory explosion.  His hands became severely infected and began to develop gangrene.  Just one rinse with lavender essence relieved his pain and initiated an immediate healing process by which he completely recovered with minimal scarring.  This set Dr. Gattefosse upon a lifelong campaign to study and promote medical applications of essential oils.

For a calming, relaxing effect:

  • Massage lavender into the back of the neck or bottom of the feet for relaxation.
  • Add a few drops of lavender to your bath water for a relaxing soak.
  • Diffuse lavender before bed to quiet the mind and prepare for sleep.

For soothing effects on the skin:

  • Soothe minor burns by applying 2–3 drops to the affected area.
  • Rub several drops onto the scalp area to help soothe minor irritations.
  • Reduce or minimize scar tissue by massaging it on or around affected areas.
  • Apply 2–3 drops to relieve itching and soothe skin.

Other healing uses of Lavender include:

*Relief of itching and chapped skin

*Healing of blisters and burns, including sunburn

*Can be diffused during childbirth for relief in labor.

*Has been used for acne, allergies, aches and pains

*Can be useful for colic, abdominal cramps, headaches and nausea

*Caution:  If you are unsure of the grade of oil you are using, please research the supporting documentation from company literature.  Some Lavender oils are a lesser grade and when applied to a burn may cause further irritation.

Unlike food-grade or fragrance oils, therapeutic-grade essential oils, like Young Living’s ‘Lavender’, meets specific criteria in plant growth, preparation, purity and potency.  Thus, research shows pure essential oils, such as Lavender can provide similar benefits to humans and animals that the oil gives to the Lavender plant itself. (YL, 2008)

Young Living essential oils can be diluted with a vegetable based oil or YL V-6 mixture.  Lavender is a versatile oil which can be used by young and old alike.
